Flood waters begone! Managed to make it to San Marco today. As you can see, it's still a little wet there, but it was lovely to see the sun. We did *a lot* of walking. A good thing too because we also ate *a lot* of 🍕 Can highly recommend Venice Free Walking Tour - our guide Federico was extremely knowledgeable and funny and it was a great way to spend a few hours

"Bella Venezia" - to quote the Italian tourists wearing bin bags 😅 Had an incredible day experiencing acqua alta, an exceptionally high tide that turns the city into a kind of Atlantis. The Venetians are remarkable people to weather this with such good humour despite the heavy toll it must take on their livelihoods. And Venice is still beautiful no matter the rain or tide. We have a duty to protect this unique place which has seen so much history

I had forgotten face ceiling in the Academia. Hall of Faces, anyone? 🖼 Also featuring a great deal of wtf Christianity. Religion is extremely weird. 🖼 Saw some incredible Bellinis and Boschs. The talent that goes into creating a deliberately foreshortened painting (i.e. for a church roof) is mind blowing. 🖼 Those two girls remind me of @lauramadeleineauthor & I! 🖼

My new read is Always North by Vicki Jarrett. Also I rather like this photo I took. Thanks murky parental bedroom light. I've been a fan of @unsung.books ever since I read Metronome by Oliver Langmead and then The Beauty by Aliya Whitely. They publish high concept work that's really accessible

WE WON A BRITISH FANTASY AWARD 🥇
Two days later and it still hasn’t really sunk in. We were up against some incredible podcasts and audiobooks this year and it was an honour just to be nominated.
We were so sure we wouldn’t win that we hadn’t prepared any kind of speech... which is why @m_leigh_g thanked Prince 🤟 in her very much ad libbed non-speech. 😂

We are so proud to be (hopefully) improving representation of diversity in genre fiction. This is an ongoing discussion that needs to happen and we want to thank everyone who has joined us on the journey so far.

Amazing weekend at the (supposedly) haunted Woodford Castle in Dorset. What an incredible building, so much old stone and history, riddled with secret chambers. The constant rain made it more atmospheric and I enjoyed giving a reading in the undeniably creepy undercroft. Visited Max Gate, Hardy's house, which just made me feel sorry for his wife, Emma, and the ever beautiful Lulworth Cove. Got to hang out with some very cool people and be driven around in a Rolls-Royce Ghost which is undoubtedly the poshest car I will ever find myself in ☺️ .

I am really enjoying this series. Great writing and complex characters, and it's not without humour too. I loved Harper in ACSDAL and it was good to see positive disability rep in a fantasy book. This is more a reimagining than a retelling, as the author only uses the bare bones of the Beauty and the Beast plotline. More interesting is the intersection of worlds - ours with a traditional fairytale universe whose stereotypes Harper is all too aware of. I'm keen to see where the story goes from here. Many thanks to Bloomsbury for my beautiful proof of A Heart So Fierce and Broken. It opens like a door! (Check out my story to see) .

🍂I finished this beautiful signed hardback last night. Not at all what I thought it would be...in a good way! Dracula always (and understandably) hogs the spotlight in a vampire tale, but not so here. The Deathless Girls is described as the story of his brides, but really it's their own story and focuses on how they ended up vampyre. Issues of racism and discrimination are explored as well as first love and the bonds of sisterhood. I particularly liked the fact that twins Kizzy and Lil are so different. If you're looking for a well-written and evocative autumn read, don't pass this one by. Oh and I loved the epigraph from Catherynne Valente's Deathless - one of my favourite books 🍂
